Selection/Deselection of Materials

Selection of Materials
Our district librarians are committed to ensuring that our school libraries offer diverse, informative, and engaging collections.  LISD librarians use the following in their development of our library collections:
    • Analysis of Collection for Gaps:  We continuously assess our library collections to identify any gaps in content.  This proactive approach ensures our resources support both the curriculum and our students' diverse interests.
    • Consideration of Requests:  We highly value the input from our school community.  Requests for new books from teachers and students are carefully considered, ensuring that our library reflects the needs and interests of all users.
    • Evaluation of Potential Additions: Each book is rigorously evaluated for its literary, political, artistic, and scientific merit before being added to our collection. This evaluation is supported by professional reviews from respected publications like the School Library Journal and Horn Book, as well as others.
    • Consult Award Lists: We also consider books that appear on state and national award lists, choosing titles that have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to young people's literature.
    • Budget Consideration: Managing our resources efficiently is crucial. We strategically allocate our budget to maximize the impact of our purchases, ensuring we meet as many educational and recreational needs as possible within our financial constraints.
    • Alignment with Curricular Needs: Our selections are closely coordinated with teaching staff to ensure that new acquisitions support and enhance the curriculum. This alignment helps us provide materials that are not only educational but also directly applicable to students' coursework.
